Situated along beautiful Lake Gleneida, Carmel has
been the county seat since 1812, when Putnam County
was formed. Sybil Ludington's statue on Route 52 marks the heroic efforts
of this young 16 year old who rode her horse "Star" for over 40
miles on rough night roads to warn of the British invasion of Danbury during
the Revolutionary War.
