Located in the highlands of Putnam County, the more than 10,000-acre park is situated adjacent to the Taconic State Parkway and on both sides of Route 301. The summer season centers around the beach, the camping area, and the Nature Center. Since 1984, the Taconic Outdoor Education Center has served as a year-round site for environmental and recreation programs. Complete with cabins and lodge, it offers a variety of outdoor activities for school and youth service groups.

Fishing is allowed on Canopus Lake and several other ponds in the park. Stillwater Lake is a trout-managed lake with thousands of Rainbow and Brook Trout being stocked every year.

Canopus Beach has not only a large sandy beach, but a concession stand, locker rooms, shower rooms, toilet facilities and picnic groves. No dogs allowed in the beach, picnic or camping areas.

Winter activities at the Park include cross-country skiing on groomed and ungroomed trails, snow shoeing, ice skating and sledding. Rentals are available on weekends and there is a warming lodge and snack bar.
